I spent a brief few hours with @berlinstagram, the creator of hashtag #thatpipeagain, I snapped a few shots of the pink pipe line while we explored.
I did some googling and found out that these pipes are used to drain water from construction sites because Berlin is apparently one big swamp. These pipes usually start at a construction site and end at the nearest river or canal.
The other weird thing is that these pipes don’t just run parallel to the streets, but they twist and turn in some very interesting directions. Apparently this is done to avoid shrinkage or breakage during varying temperatures in Berlin.
People all over berlin now use the hashtag #thatpipeagain whenever they take photos of these pipes.
